The new scientific discovery of patterned chaos signifies a deep, synchronistic link between East and West. To writer and philosopher Katya Walter, this science of order in the midst of disorder, "is arguably the single most important discovery of the 20th century." Popularly, and somewhat misleadingly, known as chaos theory, this new science studies processes that appear to be chaotic. But indeed they are not. They are determined, as one can predict an overall pattern or order in everything. Chaos theory has thus enabled us to see order within apparently random events. And because its mandala-like computer graphics look like fine art, and its explanations of reality read like poetry, this new discovery is a breath of fresh air in the often humdrum world of science. The fractal is an important symbol of chaos theory. Walter explains that "a fractal can repeat itself with variation on scales large and small, in space or time or matter or energy. Or all of them together." The most famous fractal is the Koch snow flake. In 1904, Helge von Koch described a triangle on which one "grows" another triangle onto the back of each side, just like the old triangle, but only 1/3 its size. The first symbol that thus appears is the so-called Star of David. Now, the interesting and synchronistic or "chaotic" part of the Koch snow flake is that long before Koch described it mathematically, this so -called Jewish Star had come to Palestine via India. It was actually developed in India, and, according to Tantric legend, it was brought to the Holy Land by Indian sages around 4000 BC. These "missionaries" supposedly visited Arabia, Abyssinia, and Phoenicia. Eventually they settled in the mountains of an area which today is known as Israel. They named the place Shriishailam. In English Shrii translates as "divine," Shaila means "hill," and Ma means "shelter." This divine, hilly shelter is today known as Jerusalem. Through chaos theory the Tantric or Jewish star has now become a central "symbol" in Western science. Thus a remarkable cycle of mystical and scientific interconnectedness is completed. But that is not all. Walter also explains how the DNA spiral relates to the Chinese oracle I Ching. She has found that the genetic code and the I Ching function through the same chaos patterns. Moreover, "the physical system of DNA can be translated mathematically into the psychic system of the I Ching." That the genetic code has 64 codons, and the I Ching has 64 hexagrams is only the beginning of her stunning findings of "co-chaos" between matter and mind. The synchronistic importance of this is even more astounding when considering that Tantra "accepted that human life had 64 types of expressions, and hence there were 64 branches of Tantra."
